I have a Viewsonic19in monitor that displays for 20-30 sec then goes black but stays on. Is this a simple fix?

the monitor powers up and stays powered up no problem. However, the display only stays about 20-30 seconds and then goes black. The power stays on, but no display.

If PC is giving the single OK beep and monitor light stays green (instead of amber) and display goes black after 20-30 sec, monitor backlight could have a problem. Trouble could be on the backlight or its inverter circuit.
Try the monitor on another PC or laptop. If there is no problem w/ monitor it could be your PC that has a problem.
