Can a Gateway laptop drive a 30″ apple monitor?

I have a gateway mx6650 laptop with a standard VGA monitor output and my mac 30" display has only a DVI-D dual link connector. Will my laptop, with an ATI 3D RAGE PRO PCI video card, be able to power the 30" with some kind of VGA to DVI-D converter? All I want to do is test the monitor to see if it will turn on, but it won't turn on without an input. Any help is appreciated, TIA!
